Kapa Haka at Chelsea

At Chelsea Primary School, our Kapa Haka rōpū holds a cherished place in our school culture, reflecting our commitment to embracing and celebrating Aotearoa New Zealand’s rich Māori heritage. Through Kapa Haka, we nurture a sense of belonging, pride, and connection for all ākonga, while also honoring Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

We are proud to offer both a Junior and Senior Kapa Haka group. This ensures that students of all ages have the opportunity to participate, grow their confidence, and develop a deep appreciation for Māori performing arts. Our Junior Kapa Haka introduces younger students to waiata (songs), haka, and tikanga Māori in a supportive environment, while our Senior Kapa Haka builds on these foundations, fostering leadership and cultural understanding.

Our Kapa Haka rōpū is open to everyone—ākonga of all backgrounds are welcome to join. This inclusivity reflects our belief that Kapa Haka is not only a celebration of Māori culture but also an opportunity to bring our school community together, weaving the values of whanaungatanga and manaakitanga into the fabric of Chelsea life.

We perform regularly at both school and community events, showcasing our students’ talent, dedication, and teamwork. Key highlights of our calendar include the Birkdale Beach Haven Kapa Haka Festival and the Onetaunga Festival, where we connect with our wider community and share our love for Kapa Haka on a larger stage.

Kapa Haka is an important part of the Chelsea Primary School culture, instilling pride in our tamariki, celebrating diversity, and strengthening our identity as a school that values cultural richness and connection. Through Kapa Haka, we are truly growing global citizens with a strong foundation in the unique heritage of Aotearoa.
