Performing Arts

We are fortunate to have very talented staff at Chelsea, including teachers who take on huge roles looking after our Dance Sport team, the Chelsea Choir and the Kapahaka group, enabling our students to participate in exciting performing arts opportunities.

Our school DanceSport team is run by Carole Carkeek who teaches couples (usually from years 4 to 6) to dance the Foxtrot, Samba, Chachacha and the Jive to compete at the annual National Schools Dancesport Championships held each September.  This schools competition has been open to primary schools since 2012 and in four years of competing Chelsea School has won this competition twice - in 2013 and 2015.

Chelsea Choir

Our choir of year 5 and year 6 students is trained by Tim Christie and works hard, rehearsing all year to participate in the APPA (Auckland Primary Principals Assocation) Music Festival held in November.  With Tim Christie as Associate Conductor, our choir forms part of a massed choir of over 400 children from 10 other schools that perform at the Auckland Town Hall.  This year's performance was a varied programme including Say a little prayer, What a wonderful world, Hareruia and YMCA with all the actions!

The choir also performs at school assemblies and the performing arts showcase.

Our kapahaka group is run by Miss Hannah Croucher and Ms Katrina Kiely.  The group recently performed with 50 other schools at the Onepoto Cultural Festival.

School production

Every two years we put on a school production involving the whole school, enabling our students to enjoy expressing themselves through music and drama.  These productions involve a great deal of work by our students and staff and are hugely enjoyed by the school community.  Our next production will be in 2016.
